Khayelitsha
The Area
Khayelitsha is a township just outside Cape Town. Khayelitsha (means New Home) has over 1 million residents. An estimated 30% of the population is unemployed, of which 60% are under the age of 30. The formal sector inside Khayelitsha employs only a mere 8% of the estimated labour force. The informal, micro and survival sector makes up an additional 46% of the employment rate.

LtE involvement

It was in Khayelitsha township, just outside Cape Town, that Learn to Earn started up in 1989.

The current building in Ilitha Park, was opened in 2000. This building houses the administrative staff of LtE, the skills training, the Business Resource Centre and the Odd Cup coffee shop.
