The Odd Cup

The Odd Cup is the name of the coffee shops at the Khayelitsha and Hermanus branches of Learn to Earn. Each of these coffee shops is run in partnership with Learn to Earn by an entrepreneur in the E³ mentorship programme.

The Odd Cup Hermanus offers a menu which includes breakfasts, a selection of gourmet sandwiches, hearty African-themed main courses and pastries. As well as what Learn to Earn staff call 'The Best Coffee On The Planet'!

The course material is taken from the official learnership programme of the Forest Industries SETA (now incorporated within the Fibre Processing & Manufacturing or FPM SETA) and is adapted to suit this short course. It prepares students to either go on a learnership, or to be skilled enough to seek entry level employment in the woodwork and cabinetry industry. The theory and practical projects prepare students to become employees as well as equip them to become self-employed.

  • Perform breakout operations
  • Produce basic hand-crafted furniture
  • Produce machine sanded timber and board product components and products
  • Produce planed timber product components and products
  • Produce sawn timber and board product components and products
  • Produce straight laminated timber and board components
  • Apply health and safety standards to a work area
  • Comply with good housekeeping practices
  • Read and interpret basic engineering drawings

The purpose of the Basic Handyman Skills course is to equip course graduates with the entry level knowledge and skills required in order to find employment as assistants in any of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, painting or general handyman.

Sewing Production Course


The purpose of this course is to equip learners with the necessary sewing skills and understanding of the production process to be able to become production line machinists in the garment industry. They will be developed to join component parts (of products or garments) at industry quality and production standards using a variety of machines.

Course Outline:

  • Prepare and set machines for specific operation
  • Identify and prepare product parts
  • Pick-up, align and
  • Operate machines to safety standards
  • present product parts to machines
  • Sew parts together
  • Inspect and dispose of product parts
  • Complete administrative procedures

Learners produce the following items: cushions, make-up bags, skirts of various designs, hoody tops, leggings, and Madiba-style shirts.

 2018 Sewing Production Line cost


The initial set-up of the Sewing Production Line course was made possible through funding received from the National Lotteries Development Trust Fund.




Our long term objective is that students will go on to start entrepreneurial enterprises possibly creating employment for others. Others are selected to work at Learn to Earn’s Business Resource Centre in the Zakhele project or find workplace opportunities.

  • Control & threading of plain machine and over-locker
  • Industrial machines are used as per industry standards
  • Sample portfolio
  • Boy’s pants with fly and back pocket
  • Panel skirt
  • Unlined lady’s jacket
  • Man’s shirt with long sleeves, pocket and cuff
  • Lined laptop bag
  • Lined shopper with inner pocket & zip

Students are taught a range of sewing skills using industrial sewing machines. At the end of the course, graduates will have a range of sample garments as well as a workbook/portfolio of skills learnt.

Basic Cashiers Skills

This course prepare graduates to work at Point of Sale e.g. as cashiers or sales assistants. Focus is placed on customer skills as well as computer skills specific to the industry.

  • Attending to customers
  • The core concepts of the wholesale and retail environment
  • Processing payments at a Point of Sale (POS)
  • Security procedures and awareness
